    Notes
    • Governor of Vermont.

Uncle Redfield Jr., father Fletcher both served as Governor. Grandfather Redfield served as Governor, US Secretary of War and US Senator. Educated at Hill School, Pottstown, PA. Graduate, Yale, 1912. Army artillery officer, France, World War I.

Employed at family business, Vermont Marble, rising to President and Chairman of the Board.

Elected President, Village of Proctor, 1930. Elected Chairman, Town of Proctor Republican Committee, 1932. Vermont House, 1933-39. Speaker, 1937-39. Vermont Senate, 1939-41. Lieutenant Governor, 1941-45. Election broke Republican party "Mountain Rule" for selecting statewide candidates, which dictated that the governor and lieutenant governor be from opposite sides of the Green Mountains. Governor, 1945-47, again breaking "Mountain Rule" by not coming from opposite side of Green Mountains than his predecesor. Ran for reelection but lost Republican primary to Ernest W. Gibson, 1946, the first Republican Governor of Vermont ever denied renomination. Actively prevented Gibson from gaining control of state Republican party or running for another office, a factor in Gibson's 1950 acceptance of appointment as federal judge.

After leaving governorship, resumed business activities. Established Mortimer R. Proctor Trust, which supported non profit activities in arts & culture, education, and religion that benefitted citizens of Proctor.

Authored "Pleasant Memories From Public Life, 1932-1952," "Vermont, The Unspoiled Land," and "The English University Novel."
