James Proctor 1774 - 1858

  Item Of Interest	My great-grandfather's name was James Proctor. He married Mary Brennaman, a sister of Abraham Brennaman. In their early days he built a large log house in the then wilderness and raised a large family. This place is known today as the late William Whitehead place in the Cove Valley about 3/4 of a mile from the head of Cove Branch. They lived at this place all their lives and are both buried in a now grown-up and abandoned graveyard on this farm. James found in the 1850 Rockcastle Co. Census with Mary 'Polly' Carson as wife. (I believe this was a mistake, as Mary 'Polly' Carson Lawrence married James' son, William Henry 'Green' Proctor 1844/1845.) A letter found at the Rockcastle Co library in Mt. Vernon, KY Webmaster Note: The 1850 Rockcastle, KY Census listing for James Proctor age 74,  reflects 'Mary.'  Female  age 45 living in the household. There is not a reference to 'Polly Carson'. As stated in the letter above, It is correct Mary 'Polly' Carson Lawrence married James' son, William [Willis] Henry 'Green' Proctor 1844/1845.  It should be noted as well,  Mary 'Polly' Carson Lawrence was the daughter of Tartulas and Ruth Carson Lawrence. 'Mary' living with James in the 1850 census appears to be  Mary Carson,  the daughter of Joseph Sr. and Mary A. Polly Evans Carson,  and the sister of Ruth [Ruthy] Carson Lawrence, mother of Mary 'Polly' Carson Lawrence.  Thus, this 'Mary,'  living with James Proctor in the 1850 census is the aunt of Mary 'Polly' Carson Lawrence Proctor. To add to this confusion, you will find William [Willis] Henry 'Green' Proctor listed in the 1850 Census with 'Polly' on the 26 Southern District, Rockcastle, KY listing.  William is listed as 'Green B. Proctor'.  ~ Where the B. comes form, I do not know......  If you do, please submit!   ;-)
