The Benevolence Of Her Heart, The Sweetness Of Her Temper, And The Extraordinary Endowments Of Her Mind Obtained The Regard Of All Who Knew Her,

    • John Proctor has always been an enigma. I find many blank spots in his life that are hard to fill in. Two real mysteries are:

      (1) The story that has come down through our family is that he was a jailer/warden at the Old Carthage Jail in Carthage, IL at the time Joseph Smith and his brother Hyrum were murdered there. The stories have been vivid and bloody. Yet I can find no actual proof of his name on the roles at that time. I've made a couple of visits to Carthage and the jail (now a shrine to Josephe Smith) and found interesting material, but not a lot about John.

      (2) I had never heard anything about him being in the Civil War, but while doing some research at the Wilson's Creek Battlefield, I found a military record that in itself is a bit strange. He didn't enlist till near the end of the war, he was evidently mustered out due to a health or injury problem, and he would have been 52 at the time. A little unusual I believe.

My g-grandmother Manerva died on her 96th birthday in 1961. I was an adult with two children and our whole family was very devoted to her. She was a wonderful story teller, but unfortunately none of us was interested in our ancestry at that time so a lot of these questions I have come up with and have been unable to find answers to I know she could have provided. Her daughter, my maternal grandmother, lived till just before her 99th birthday and I still wasn't on the trail of ancestors. I could just kick myself. However, I don't recall either of them talking about their Proctor parents and grandparents and it has occurred to me as odd that I never found obituaries for either John or Amelia among the possessions of either of these ladies. I do know that Manerva was devoted to her sister and brothers, although she lived in MO and the ones she was closest to remained in the Carthage, IL area. I have had access to the Bible of James D and Mary (Brenneman) Proctor and it was a treasure of information - but no clippings. My grandmother's Bible was full of clippings and obituaries, etc. about family - but none about the Proctor's. I know there is information out there somewhere, I just have to find it.
