    • Captain John McCall, formally known as Lt. John McCall, served in General Francis  Marion's Brigade with Lt.. William Proctor, Jr. , a friend, during American Revolution in South Carolina.  The story goes---they were fighting to out smart the British and living on 'taters and hickory bark'.  While Lt. Proctor was away in service, some Tories approached his home  and tried to take the meat supply from Proctor's wife, Jane.  She killed one of them with a butcher knife and  drove the rest away, saving herself and her family from maybe death.  She was arrested and held for a time, as this was considered an overt act against the authority of Great Britian.  There were other notes of the act of bravery on the part of Jane Proctor.  Not long after that Lt. Proctor was killed in battle.  Capt. McCall went to the Proctor home to inform Proctor's wife of his death.  Sometime later, Capt. McCall married the widowered wife of his friend,   Jane Proctor.
John McCall came over on the ship "John and Mary" with his family.  They had departed from the Harbour of Rotterdam bound for Charleston, SC.  John's  father, John McCall and wife, Martha Hext,  and their children on this trip were, Christian b. 1738, John  b. 1741, Gertrude b. 1744, John George b. 1748, Odely b. 1749  and Harry b. 1750.  This was taken from the Council Journal dated February 7, 1753.  John was given 400 acres of land.  His family remained in Charleston.
